The X commemorates the 10th anniversary of the completion and test drive of the first CC vehicle in 1996. General Motor’s new HydroGen4 is the latest proof that fuel-cell cars are advancing at an astonishing rate; trouble is, they have so far to go. Hydrogen-powered cars are still light years away from being affordable and practical, but this one comes closer to looking, working and driving like a conventional car than any we’ve yet driven.You fill up with compressed hydrogen from something that looks like a regular pump; it takes no longer than brimming a petrol tank. The hydrogen flows into the fuel cells, where it is split into protons and electrons, the electrons creating a current that drives the electric motor. They recombine with oxygen to create only water vapour as a by-product.

The Hyundai i20 is the latest little car from the reinvigorated Korean company, following in the footsteps of the i10 and i30. It’s still built abroad (India, to be precise) but the i20 has been designed and engineered in Europe, offers such a decent level of standard kit that you’ll cough up thousands more on rivals, and it comes with a five-year warranty. But does it have the sparkle to make us forget the lukewarm Getz? The i20 probably won’t change those impressions. It looks like a bad copy of a Vauxhall Corsa, and unfortunately the badge still doesn’t really have much kudos in Britain 2009. That said, the i20 is much better looking than the old Getz.

It should be a rather embarrassing relic, the VXR8: a car so far removed from the economic and environmental Zeitgeist that it'd be no surprise to find it propping up the bar, telling slightly racist jokes and pinching ladies' backsides, before staggering off home to complain about how much better things were before turbochargers and direct injection and global warming.So that's 6.2 litres and 425bhp of hormone-fuelled rage, up 14bhp on the old VXR8. Chuck in some bright white paint, 20-inch alloys and a pair of tailpipes big enough to lose small children in, and you've got yourself a super-saloon to provoke more disapproving stares than Jonathan Ross cavorting naked through a Press Complaints Commission meeting. Though the bigger engine doesn't cut the VXR8's 0-60mph time, mid-range punch is noticeably improved, meaning you can now happily lollop around in almost-subtle short-shifting fashion, pretending you actually do care about emissions or, y'know, other people. Fear not, though, the VXR8 is still hellish quick when you give up that pretence. Traction levels remain trivial, but it gets slidey in such a gentle, progressive way that you don't feel like it's trying to kill you (much) while the steering and gearchange have a pleasing weightiness. Oh, and the new exhausts sound like the early throes of an interplanetary disaster.
